About

Landscapes, with their rich diversity of location, influenced by an hourly setting and change of weather through the seasons have always captured my interest, and have afforded me many rewarding hours of viewing pleasure, and subject material for creating art — which includes the landscapes of the figure, the interior, and the still-life.

I enjoy the out-of-doors, especially areas with hills, valleys, and bodies of water — in particular Central New York State and the Adirondack regions. I appreciate how a landscape can easily catch you unawares, providing opportunities for contemplation or reflection; seeing something which is otherwise commonplace or familiar with fresh new insight and renewed interest.

My art training and related experiences have included majoring in studio art or art education while in college and graduate school; teaching art at the middle, secondary and college levels; and as an art gallery worker and exhibits co-curator. I attended painting and drawing workshops and studied privately with teacher-artists including Mario Cooper, Robert Noel Blair, Valerie Craig, and Giovanni Casadei. However, among the many artist-teachers that I have had the pleasure of working with over the years, the most influential are Guy Corriero and Martin Mugar (painting), plus Frank Eckmar and Roy Nydorf (printmaking).

The work here represents subjects and the various media I have been involved with recently, with older works included. Many of these were done over the past several years and are predominately from favorite areas in upstate New York, local views near where I live in East Central Indiana, as well as where I had lived in south-eastern Pennsylvanian, and also include various vacation locations.

As an artist, I am especially aware of the effects of light on interior and exterior objects and settings due to changes in time of day, weather, and seasonal influences. Of particular interest are landscape settings that include water in its many forms: creeks, rivers, ponds, puddles, lakes, fog, snow, etc. I am intrigued with the ability of water to be opaque, translucent, transparent and reflective, and the role these qualities play in our perceptions and emotional responses.

The art works and other content here are my own — unless otherwise attributed. Like making a painting, this website will continue to evolve as needed, the web pages layout will be changing as I determine what content will be included as well as how to organize and display the various media and images.

I hope you enjoy the works presented so far and come back again in the coming weeks to see the website’s progress, new additions of art works, the galleries and blog entries.

Thanks for visiting,

–Lawrence Sexton
