The grasses and tree foliage of the marsh are becoming past their summer peak- green-yellows, tans and peach are settling in, the last of the summer wildflowers are blooming. Soon the first touches of autumn will be resting on this landscape, the cooler temperatures, shorter days, the quick shifting of color to orange, bright reds, maroons, and yellows. For the moment it was still at the edge of summer when I passed through the area, this time with my family, it was 1990. I made my sketches and my working notes and then tucked them away as I walked, carrying and visiting with my young daughter…soon to be an “older” sister. It was years later when I came upon this forgotten collection of images and documentation of a moment and place fifteen years before. I took out a piece of gesso primed watercolor paper and started to paint a smallish 14×11 inch color study…and then followed that with this 24″x36″ oil on canvas painting.
