Lewey Lake Waterway

This is the flow-water area that winds between two adjoining lakes. Because these two bodies of water are only slightly at different elevations, the movement of the water is constant but calm, and wonderful for canoeing as it is  too shallow and rock-filled in places to permit power boating.  The view is looking southwest toward a nearby State Park camping area about a quarter mile away, where I have enjoyed camping along the lake shore since my youth, and have happily shared this experience with my wife and children over a number of years.

Prior to this work I had made a number of  sketches, watercolors and oil paintings in this general area over the years, but because I most often was painting from a canoe along this particular stretch of water I seldom got out to hike along the shore and upper embankments.  One day while out exploring the area with my children I saw this view though the trees, just beyond someones campsite. I made a note of it and the location at the time and came back the following year prepared to paint. I started this painting during a family summer vacation but was unable to finish and needed to come back the following summer to make adjustments to work I had done in the studio over the previous winter. Still unable to finish making last revisions on the piece during the vacation, I had to take it back home once more to complete the final touches.
