Ocean Watch, Chincoteague Island, Virginia

From My Sketchbook:
This was done around 8:00 PM, the sun was low and the air was beginning to cool and become comfortable, in the low 80’s.  There had been a heat wave all along the Eastern Seaboard for the past week, and it had been near 95 degrees Fahrenheit during the middle of this day. Anyway, I was pleased to have the opportunity to be here. When I was young I had seen the 1961 film “Misty,” and because of it wanted to someday come to the island and see the wild ponies and beach for myself; I wasn’t disappointed, the visit became a child’s dream realized.

Due to the heat, I was glad that I hadn’t arrived at the beach earlier in the day as intended, and had instead spent part of the afternoon visiting air conditioned shops in the local village, and making a visit to the “Island Creamery.” This is a popular ice cream parlor we saw on the evening before, during a drive out to see the beach and the wild ponies, it is the home of over 32 flavors of very fine homemade ice cream.

It was my intention to do some work during the morning and afternoon, and wanted to sketch a few street scenes while in the village, but due to the heat, there was no place out-of-doors comfortable enough to safely sit or stand for an extended period of time. Even being outside standing still in the shade for longer than 5 minutes was unpleasant. It came to my mind to make a sketch while relaxing inside at the ice cream parlor, but alas, my hands were full at the time. (Allow me to recommend the Chocolate and Peanut Butter, Coffee, and Mint Chip flavors.)
