My friend, Booker, sees this incredibly beautiful view every day. It is from the balcony of his home in the estate La Grande Princesse area on the north side of Saint Croix, about a mile from the coast, and here, looking about two miles northeast toward the Christiansted Harbor and the Caribbean Sea.
As you may imagine, it was a pleasure to be there, make this record of my stay, and to have this drawing as a reminder, a souvenir. For me, more than photography, a drawing or painting can serve as a very special personal journal entry; a moment in my life. The act of making art by hand is an investment that yields a work rich with associated information and experiences. The piece allows me to repeatedly bring to mind numerous details about a place, a moment, a fragrance, a meal, people, conversations, weather, time of day, time of year, and more.
