From My Sketchbook:
Another day at the beach with family, and for me almost any day at a beach is an opportunity for relaxing and sketching or painting. With or without the presence of people, there is usually a combination of sky, water, surf on the shoreline, sand, rocks, plant life, architecture, and weather conditions that make this environment ready made with potential subjects for making art.
On this sunny day the sky was filled to the horizon with large clouds that had gaps between them through which variations of bright blue could be seen. As it was Sunday of the July 4th holiday weekend, there were adults and children filling the beach area in every direction with their umbrellas, coolers, blankets, chairs, towels, toys, and sun shelters. In selecting something for sketching the challenge was less about finding a subject or composition interesting enough to draw, but was rather more about having to limit myself to selecting just one subject from many possibilities, because of the limited amount of time I had available to work before packing up and leaving.
