Dusk over Christiansted, St Croix

For a late November day, it was balmy weather in the mid 70’s with a hint of a breeze, simply ideal for being out-of-doors, taking a walk, dinning outside by the water’s edge, relaxing and enjoying the view.

I was caught by the stillness and quiet of this setting that was in direct contrast to the fact that where I was standing when I made the sketch for this piece there were individuals, couples, and groups of people walking back and forth around me and behind me, they were talking and laughing, there was music coming from various buildings, it was busy as folks made their way to and from the restaurant and a hotel’s outdoor beachside cafe/bar that were near at hand.

Another thing that viewers of art might not consider is that as the artist, my goal is to design a work from what inspires me, in this case I must confess to have taken some liberties with the composition as well.  I removed some boats which I felt did not add to the overall composition, and as such were a distraction, I removed the people on the boats, I left out the distant lights of buildings on the far side of the harbor, I softened the lighting, and reduced the contrast and number of colors.  This work in some ways is much closer to the truth of what I had seen on a previous visit but hadn’t been able to make a recording of the setting at the time.
