Harbor Rest by the Cay, Christiansted, St Croix

I am pleased to share that this painting has been accepted into the Twenty-Third Minnestrista Annual Jurried Art Show (2013), in Muncie, Indiana.

The painting was first realized in sketches done while on vacation as I enjoyed my time drawing at various locations I found interesting along the harbor wharf.  The immediate area there offers readily available subject material that easily lends itself  to numerous opportunities for making art.  In various combinations to select from there is the inner harbor with the boats, the view out to the open water of the sea, the nearby cay, historic landmarks, architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, the wooded hillsides as a backdrop, street views, and people milling about, sitting, and visiting.  All of this is at hand by looking in any direction, and not needing to walk any more than a quarter mile along or away from the harbor.

I have been considering enlarging this subject as was my original plan, this was simply to be a small color study in preparation for a larger work, but I like the immediacy of the final results here and am of the opinion that I can not improve significantly on the piece overall; the work here feels complete and finished and it is time to move on to the next painting.
