Early in the morning during the first week of May there was some noticeable haziness in the air due to warm weather with high humidity. As I was driving through Glen Miller Park, I saw this view of the pool of water with the reflections of the sky and trees, all set against a backdrop of distant trees that were diffused in appearance.
I have driven or walked past this location numerous times in the past and noticed the brook and pool before, but on this occasion the contrasts between the foreground and background colors and textures was especially interesting. For awhile, the view of the softened distant details and muted color was similar to what I might see when looking into a slightly foggy setting, but on this occasion it brighter lighting and warmer color than what I would usually experience on a cool and grayed foggy morning.
As I didn’t have much time to set up to do a somewhat large painting, I did this rather quick small work on paper with a painting knife, with some brushwork added when finishing the final touches.
Note:
This painting and its companion piece, “Pool in Snow, Glen Miller Park,” are now in the permanent art collection of the Randolph County Art Association, of Indiana.
