It is a pleasure to share that I was able to complete this painting in the middle of this past week, framed it and donated on Thursday (March 7) for the 2013 annual fund raiser of the Women’s Fund of the Wayne County Foundation (Indiana). This was my first time participating in this event.
The painting received a Second Place Award in the show from the jurors on Friday, and received the People’s Choice Award on Saturday, and then it then was successfully sold at the fund raising silent auction.
I saw this scene while passing through the “Depot District” of Richmond, Indiana a couple weeks ago and stopped long enough to make a record and notes of the colors, tones and overall composition. Even though I took liberties with the setting by raising my vantage point well above street level and pulling the left and right sides of the street view closer than they appear naturally, the work retains general details of the location and the mood of the day. It was a cool, breezy, rainy day in the late afternoon of the first week in March, but much warmer and more comfortable than had been a few snowy days before and afterward.
Interestingly, for all the years I have lived in Richmond, this is actually the first cityscape painting I have done there. Mostly I have worked on landscapes from around my neighborhood or vacation locations. With this work as a starting point, it is my intention to continue to explore Richmond for future painting subjects.
