Table Setting with Tea Pot, Soup Spoons and Rice Bowls

This was a painting demonstration I did for a private evening class of students. My goal was to include a variety of objects that offered: warm and cool colors, a contrast of simple solid colors set against patterns, as well as soft mat fabric surfaces juxtaposed against hard and glossy ceramic and wood surfaces.
It was an enjoyable time painting the piece as we talked and I worked. The students asked questions and I explained what I was observing and doing in a step by step progression from the start of the initial pencil drawing, to the final washes of color.
It is an interesting assortment of objects, each with a story. Briefly, the porcelain rice bowls, soup spoons, and chop sticks were a gift from Graduate School friends, from Taiwan. The wood platter and ceramic tea pot were a gift from an art department colleague, from Japan. And the napkins, porcelain napkin rings, and two table cloth were wedding gifts to my wife and me.
